Rangi wants more students to cycle ANDREW KING

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has one of the lowest percentages of students cycling to school in the city. Now, the school is looking at establishing a 1km zone around the school where students and staff who live within it, should cycle or walk. A study was done by former Canterbury University PhD student George Williams on how many students cycle to school. He gathered data from 1113 students from 10 schools across

The study showed Rangi Ruru had three per cent of students using a bicycle to get to school. Rangi Ruru marketing and communications manager Andrea Innes said she would have to have a look at the study to confirm the numbers were accurate. “The numbers seem quite low for me, she said. The school had already been looking at ways to get more

students and staff, to cycle or walk to class. “We are thinking about a 1km zone [around the school] and if Anna Stevenson students or staff live inside it we think they should walk or cycle, she said. Ms Innes said it would not

be compulsory. Another north-west school tied for the lowest percentage of students cycling. St Margaret’s College tied with Linwood College with just two per cent. Christchurch Boys’ High School had the highest amount of students cycling with 25 per cent, Christ’s College was second with 22 per cent. Christchurch Girls’ High School had 18 per cent of students cycling.

The study showed that 33 per cent of students from the study were not cycling due to the loads they have to carry and 12 per cent said it was because they found the journey dangerous. Canterbury District Health Board public health physician Anna Stevenson said obesity levels in New Zealand are continuing to climb, and putting cycling into an everyday activity for school students was ideal. The study said if there is good infrastructure such as safe cycleways more students are likely to cycle.

St Andrew’s defends titles yet again CHAMPIONS: Tom Johnson (centre) was part of the successful St Andrew’s College pipe bands which won three out of six titles at the New Zealand championships in Feilding last weekend. The school has a strong tradition of being champions in pipe band competitions – a feat they have kept up yet again. They won first place in the open grade 2 for the third-year running, plus juvenile champions for the 10th year in a row. The school’s B band won grade 4B with a band largely made up of first year competition players. PHOTO: FIONA SWANN

New flooding options Localised drainage work, house raising and purchase of property ANDREW KING

Residents in the embattled Flockton Basin can now see light at the end of the tunnel with new options available from the city council. The options are localised drainage works, house raising or, if the owner agrees, the city council could purchase the property. If a purchase offer is deemed the most appropriate intervention, for most properties, the land would go back on the market. Flockton Cluster Residents Group spokeswoman Jo Byrne said it was a fantastic result for an area that had been suffering for five years. “For some it will mean they only have another 12 months before work to completely stop flooding is complete,” she said. She said those most severely affected by the flooding were just keen to get on with it. “They don’t want to talk about it, they just want to look at the options and get on with it,” she said.

City councillor Ali Jones said it was a real “success story” for the residents and city council. “The massive amount of work needed to help out the residents and get it right, which is the most HAPPY: Flockton important thing, has been done in Cluster Residents Group an excellent time frame,” she said. spokeswoman Jo Byrne is The city council has contacted delighted with the options seven property owners in the residents in the area now Flockton and Dudley Creek area have. CAR HITS BOY A five-year-old boy was taken to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition on Thursday after he was struck by a car. The boy was hit at the intersection of Marshland Rd and Hammersley Ave around 12.30am. St John sent an ambulance to the scene and took the boy to hospital for further treatment. Police also attended the incident. BOY RACERS CAUSE DAMAGE A Harewood fire crew was called to Primrose St in Northcote around 5am on Monday to deal with a large patch of diesel on the road. A fire communications spokesman said the diesel was most likely put down by boy racers to make the road slippery to help them do burnouts. DETOUR IN PLACE A detour will be in place on Dover St, St Albans between property No 33 and Radnor St while SCIRT renews a section of the earthquake-damaged wastewater main. The work will begin on Thursday for about two weeks. Normal hours of work will be 7am-6pm and outside of these hours the work area will be steel plated so that one-way southbound traffic can be maintained. One side of the street will always be open for pedestrian use.

Stream health concern Ilam resident Richard Simpson writes about the state of the Waimairi Stream he lives next to after reading the Nor’West News article last week about the Wai-iti Stream drying up.

SOAP BOX

In 2014 we bought a home bordering the Waimairi Stream that offered a unique aspect to city living with a peaceful oasis running around our garden. Our children would play in the water, feed the eels and the ducks and spend countless hours watching the water peacefully flow by. We discovered some of our neighbours had lived with the Waimairi Stream for more than 40 years and remained an endearing part of their lives. In February or March last year this changed. The water level dropped lower than we had ever seen it. As we entered the summer months the stream got even lower and eventually dried up. We were living with a dry river bed that looked and smelt NEW LOCATION ADVERT.pdf awful and an increase in mos- 1

quitoes. Every time it rained, the stream would quickly appear and begin flowing fast. Then over the course of two or three days it would slow, begin to flow backwards then stop. If there was no rain for a week or so, the water would eventually disappear and we were back to a dry river bed. This summer it has been worse. We are moving from a dry river bed to a fast flowing stream on what appears to be unending cycle. We have seen eels dying due to lack of water, ducks foraging through leaf litter looking for food and dogs running up the river bed and attacking them. Our community has independently called the city council 1/05/2014 a.m. to ask why11:51:35 the stream is dying.

We have been told repeatedly it is due to lower than average rainfall meaning less water in the Canterbury basin. This does not explain why this is the first time in 40 years that our neighbours have seen the river bed dry. We have grouped together and written to Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee to ask for assistance in uncovering why this beautiful oasis is being allowed to die. We want answers that explain why the water level has all but stopped and damaging the wildlife and the beautiful oasis we call home. Have your say: Do you live next to a failing stream? A few southerlies, colder weather and you start to realise winter is coming. That’s not to say we still haven’t got some 30 deg C days ahead which makes the actions of whoever lit the fire in Bottle Lake last Friday night even more distasteful. This incident tied up six fire trucks, six water tankers and a command unit for nearly five hours. During that time anything that happened elsewhere in Christchurch faced a delayed turnout as fire appliances were sent from further away. Woolston’s truck was sent to a small fire at a rest home in Parklands because St Albans and Wainoni were at Bottle Lake. Addington went to calls in Merivale because again St Albans and city station trucks were at Bottle Lake. This is all normal

stuff when a big incident takes up lots of our resources. But when that big incident is the result of the deliberate act of some low life it becomes galling. Because one day all the circumstances will line up. And someone will die. The proximity of winter means there will be a change in fire causes. It’s probably a good time to prevent one of them if you use an electric blanket. There are at least a couple of businesses I know in the city that offer electric safety checks on these. Every year they should be inspected and doing it now will see you set up before the first really cold night sees fingers on switches.

Tree battle over ANDREW KING

After a battle with the city council for almost a year Harewood man Peter Webb and his family are breathing easy after five silver birch trees were removed from around his property. The Webb family had been experiencing respiratory problems because of the birch trees – three in a reserve at the back of the property and two out front. The Nor’West News reported in February the battle Mr Webb and his family were having with the city council over the removal of the birch trees. Mr Webb fought since March last year to get the trees cut down in spite of having medical documentation which stated his respiratory problems could be directly attributed to the trees. The trees were removed on February 16-18 with the stump grinding completed two weeks ago - making Mr Webb a very happy man. “The difference is amazing,” Mr Webb said. He said eight trees in total were cut down including the

neighbourhood is amazing. “The spirit in the neighbourhood is incredible, the reserve has had children and families in it again, everyone is ecstatic,” he said. Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey backed up Mr Webb saying allergic reactions to silver birch trees can affect health.

BUS STOP NEEDS MARKING A Shirley-Papanui Community Board member wants a risky bus stop on Sawyers Arms Rd in Northcote to be marked so vehicles don’t block it. The bus has to load or unload passengers while parked in the street because people don’t notice it is a bus stop. Board member Barbara Watson has asked if the stop can be moved up the priority list to be marked.

STREAMS BEING ASSESSED Streams in the north-west area are being looked at as part of a wider investigation into the state of waterways in the city. City council land drainage manager Keith Davison said both the Waiiti and Waimairi streams are currently under investigation as part of the city council’s land drainage recovery programme. This investigation involves identifying causes and possible mitigation options. A report on the wider investigation under way by the programme is scheduled to go to the community board in six months.

MENZSHED IN TEMPORARY QUARTERS The Bishopdale Menzshed is currently operating out of two containers and an enclosed courtyard at the Bishopdale Mall. They are meeting with the local community board and the city council to discuss its long-term accommodation goals. BELLS ON BICYCLES An initiative pushed by the Shirley-Papanui Community Board and approved by the city council will see the promotion of the use of bells on bicycles. The new initiative is aimed at change travel behaviour between cyclists and pedestrians. One early suggestion to get the project off the ground is to have famous Christchurch faces on the bells to promote the use of them.

RENT SUBSIDY FOR CHILDHOOD CENTRES Support for two early childhood centres occupying city councilowned buildings or land in the north-west will continue to receive a rent subsidy for another year. The Redwood Early Learning Centre and St Albans Community Preschool are two of nine throughout the city that will continue to receive the subsidy. This is while the city council develops a policy about setting rents and leases for community groups and not-for-profit organisations occupying city council owned buildings or land.

Hey Erica, great to speak to you. Tell me about your role at the Ministry of Awesome? My role as event awesomist is to organise events. One of the events I run is called Coffee and Jam which is on every Tuesday at the Epic Building. It is an official networking place for people with ideas or people seeking inspiration. We normally have two speakers – one pitching an idea and another is an entrepreneurial education person to share their experience and tips. Is it quite a mission finding inspiring speakers every week? It is quite a mission because I want to curate a good session for our community. And because it is free and public anyone can come along. BIG TREE CO.

city’s development There is a concept I’ve worked on with the idea of Christchurch being a prototype city – where people can test ideas that can be scaled or replicated in a global context. I am hoping people can come here and start up their own businesses that can be scaled internationally but also in an architectural way. I understand with your job you get to go to a lot of cool events and take photos. Yes, I am a photographer myself as well – that is another passion of mine. One of the ways I love to give back to the community is by documenting the events around. I’ve taken photos for the urban regeneration initiative Gap Filler which activates vacant sites around the city. I did photos for social enterprise accelerator Live the Dream. I have also done a lot of social media photography. Do you ever have time to relax? I try and do everything within my week – that includes the evenings as well. The weekend is the time I relax although I know some

SHARING IDEAS: Erica Austin speaking at one of many conferences she attends.

of the conferences are in the weekends. I try and make that available for myself. I do taekwondo – that helps me get my exercise in the week. But it is great to relax and kick some stuff. I’ve been doing it for two years after I moved to Christchurch three years ago. Where are you from originally? I am from Guangzhou, China but I have been living in New Zealand for about 20 years. I studied my Masters in Architecture in Auckland

which I graduated from in 2013. It would have been a while ago but how did you find the cultural difference between New Zealand and China? I don’t remember it that much. I went back to China to study middle school. I guess for me I am more Kiwi than I am Chinese. It was difficult for me to readapt when I went back to the Chinese culture. I would love to learn more about Asia in general and I am part of the Asia-New Zealand leadership network. Hence why I am active in that cultural exchange scene. Do you think Christchurch is a very multicultural area? It could develop more. I don’t actually see a lot of Asians or Chinese people in the central city. But I think it is improving. Pre-earthquake I understand it was quite monotone but now it is becoming more multicultural because of how people are coming into the city. But I would love to see more diversity in the city. When did you learn Chinese? I came here when I was little so I knew a bit of Chi-

SALe

nese. But I went back when I was about 13-14 and stayed there for two and a half years. That is when I fully picked up the reading, writing and the language. Was it difficult? Yes, it was in the beginning – it was me just trying to write half English and then half Chinese. But I did go to Chinese school before then. When I was back I was fully immersed in the culture. Do you miss China? In a way I guess. I miss the food and my family. I think there should be a lot more lantern festival type events and I would love to see more of the noodle market. It would be cool to have it more regularly throughout the year. With the whole rebuild I take it you see Christchurch as a place full of potential? Yes, definitely and I would highly recommend everyone to live and contribute to the city in their own way. I think the city is a nice place for someone like me to work in. It allows me to test my own ideas and the Ministry of Awesome is a great place to work.

How are your roads being repaired? • SCIRT’s repair programme is delivering functional and serviceable roads. • The extent of road repairs varies from full reconstruction where there is extensive earthquake damage to isolated patch repairs. • The result may look a little patchy, but will be done to a high standard and the Council will monitor the condition and prioritise further work as part of its maintenance programme. • So far SCIRT has completed 83 per cent of its road repair programme. • After SCIRT completes its work at the end of this year, the Christchurch City Council and NZ Transport Agency will continue road repairs in their programmes.

NEW TOY: More than 23, 000 toys were sold in the fundraising campaign

Fundraiser expands ambulance fleet Cantabrians have helped turn toy ambulances into the real thing for St John Canterbury. More than 23,000 toy ambulances were sold as part of a fundraising campaign set up by ASB to help put more ambulances on the road. The fully operational ambulance was unveiled last month at the St John training centre. ASB executive general manager marketing and

communications Roger Beaumont is happy to see so many people support the campaign. “Both ASB and St John are thrilled with the outcome of the toy ambulance campaign. We’ve been overwhelmed with interest and it has been great to hear how much New Zealanders and their children have enjoyed the toys,” Mr Beaumont said. St John director of commercial services Peter Loveridge is

thrilled with the outcome of adding another ambulance to the area. “With the help of both ASB and New Zealanders the toy ambulance campaign was a success and will mean more funds to help to continue our vital emergency services in local communities,” Mr Loveridge explained. The ambulance will be added to the Canterbury fleet to help cope with the growing population.

Couplands Bakeries are back supporting the Variety Children’s Charity in this year’s Variety Trillian Bash. One of the drivers, David Drake, of Rolleston, is being supported by Christchurch business Couplands Bakeries. Mr Drake has taken part in 18 bashes in New Zealand and 12 in Australia. The Variety Bash is a car rally that travels hundreds of kilometres during one week in March each year fundraising for Kiwi kids, entertaining around 4000 children and telling the Variety story. This year Mr Drake will be driving from Picton in his Ford Fairlane (below), which has the names of all the bashes he has attended across the bonnet.

Battle of the stocks

He will be travelling with bash veteran Geoffrey Bentham and friend Len Holland. On the trip all the bash crews from around New Zealand will be treated to Couplands products along the way. Mr Drake signs up every year because he enjoys being part of something that helps so many different kids. “When you are part of donating a much-needed bike, or wheelchair, or a laptop or school uniform to assist a child in his or her development – and you see the delight on their faces, well, it is moving, and sometimes you shed a tear or two,” said Mr Drake. The Couplands bash car will be joined by Christchurch Airport’s Top Gun team in an old airport fire truck.

Putting swimming training to the test Pupils at Belfast School dived into the school’s annual swimming sports event held recently. Year 5 to eight participated in the event and represented their house teams Care, Share, Learn and Grow. Cultural convener and room 18 teacher Anna Truesdale said pupils

were excited to be putting all their swimming training to good use. Earlier in the week, pupils were able to choose which events they would like to compete in. Ms Truesdale said Belfast School is looking forward to cheering the pupils who are now on to the zones swimming competition.

Belfast pupils raise funds for Fiji counterparts Belfast School pupils and teachers have been fundraising to help Fiji following the devastation and destruction of Cyclone Winston. The school held a coin trail to help raise funds for aid. Pupils were asked to bring a donation along and the coins were placed on the word “Fiji”, written in block letters. The whole school watched as the year 8 prefects and some helpers placed the coins along the trail. Cultural convener and room 18 teacher Anna Truesdale said students were amazed at how many coins there were. She said the school reflected on how important it was to be helping others who helped the school when they had the earthquake. The money raised will be donated to help rebuild schools that were affected by the cyclone.

St Margaret’s College students Ashy Batchelor, Georgia Doyle, Papanui High School’s Liam McCracken, Oliver Foster and Burnside High School’s Amy Dean and Caitlyn O’Rourke have all been nominated by their schools. The Court Theatre Ambassadors help to connect with the younger audience and is a great opportunity to see shows for free, make contact with industry professionals and share their love of theatre with others. Ambassadors are year 12 and 13 students who are passionate about theatre with teachers nominating two representatives per school or community group – the students hold their role with The Court Theatre for 12 months. Ashy of St Margaret’s said she felt honoured to be selected as an ambassador for St Margaret’s. “I look forward to attending Court Theatre shows and supporting local actors in their

Rangi’s nine-medal haul boosts confidence HAVING A GO: Christchurch Football Club Netball Club has held its first Junior Fun Day of the season. Girls and boys from seven to 13-years-old had a great time learning some new skills and having fun playing netball. It is not too late to join the club, which is affiliated to Christchurch Football Club and is based at Westminster Sports. If you or your child are interested in joining, email club chairwoman Chrissy Willetts at cfcnetball@gmail. com or visit the website http://www.sportsground.co.nz/cfcnc for more information.

W

hen it comes to heart health, the type of fat in the diet matters. In fact, in the newly released 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the emphasis is no longer on eating a low-fat diet but instead choosing quality fats. This includes replacing saturated fats that are known to contribute to heart disease with unsaturated fats, including polyunsaturated fats, like those in Mazola Corn Oil. Corn oil has more than five times the amount of polyunsaturated fats compared to olive oil. Replacing saturated fat with heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats can reduce the risk of heart disease. What’s more, corn oil’s neutral taste complements the natural flavours of foods, making it perfect for stir-frying, saute´ing, grilling and even baking. Get more delicious recipes at Mazola.com.

money Pay tax, but never more than you need to LIZ KOH

One sure way to get in trouble with Inland Revenue is to set up your affairs in such a way as to avoid paying tax. While tax considerations should not be the driving force behind financial decisions, there is nothing wrong with being sensible and using tax implications to help choose between options. A good place to start is to check that your tax rates are correct, particularly on bank deposits. If you haven’t given your bank your IRD number, Resident Withholding Tax (RWT) will be deducted from interest at the highest tax rate. Make sure the tax rate you have given your bank is the correct one. If in doubt about your correct rate, check the Inland Revenue website. For KiwiSaver or other managed funds, you will need a Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR), which is based on your last two years of income. If your income has changed recently, this may affect yourRWTor PIR. KiwiSaver is a form of Portfolio Investment Entity (PIE). There are many other PIEs, including managed funds and bank term deposit PIEs. The highest tax rate for a PIE is 28 per cent which means these are tax efficient for those in

higher tax brackets. PIEs were introduced when KiwiSaver was launched and they are much more tax efficient than earlier investment products which paid tax at the company tax rate. Chances are, if you have an old investment fund you are paying more tax than you need to and it may be time to switch your funds into a PIE. Although filing a tax return is optional for many people now, it pays to go online to the Inland Revenue website and check if you are due a refund at the end of the tax year. Never pay more tax than you need to. Liz Koh is an authorised financial adviser. The advice given is general and does not constitute specific advice to any person.A disclosure statement is free. Busting tax myths It is March already and soon we’ll be at the end of another financial year. There’s a few myths especially rampant about now. It’s something to do with the lead-up to the the new financial year, also known as April Fool’s Day. For taxes, it’s important to differentiate truth from fiction. • Myth 1. Buying a car will reduce my tax bill. Buying that new shiny car is not the answer to reducing your tax bill. You will only get one month of depreciation on the vehicle and perhaps not even a lease payment deduction if the first payment is due in April. What this purchase may do is commit you to servicing a debt you don’t need. If your vehicle running and maintenance expenses are high then investigate options for cost savings but think twice. • Myth 2. If I buy items that are $500 or less, they can automatically be written off. This is popular for businesses replacing gear at year-end. Low value assets under $500 can be written off immediately against your tax. However if there are a number of assets acquired at the same time from the same supplier with the same deprecation rate and the total is more than $500, then it’s an asset and will be depreciated. • Myth 3. I pay tax on drawings so, if I don’t draw too much this month, I’ll pay less tax. This is one that can be confusing. Tax is

indisfarne was established in 1987, and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies, and the preschool is licensed for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne. Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant, and a cook and cleaner. We pride ourselves on being a multi-

cultural centre, both through the nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff. The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well-prepared to start primary school. Families are more than welcome to call in at any time to view the programme and meet the teachers.

Little Explorers for learning paid on your business profit, not drawings. Drawings represent how much you have taken while profit represents how much of your business income is left after business expenses. • Myth 4. I only need to keep tax invoices for my business over $50. This is true for GST. You don’t need tax invoices items less than $50 but, for income tax, you need invoices for all expenses, whatever the amount. You also need to keep records for seven years or as long as the IRD requests you to do so. • Jeremy Tauri is an associate at Plus CharteredAccountants.

ittle Explorers is a unique preschool with a small, intimate nursery of only eight children. Their two nursery teachers, Kara and Monique, use current teaching theories from Emmi Pikler and Magda Gerber to build respectful relationships with their children. They pride themselves on giving their full attention to the children, while providing them with complete freedom of movement to allow them to develop naturally at their own pace. They plan child-focused activities that support

their individual children’s next learning goals while also giving them time for uninterrupted play. Little Explorers also has a preschool with 24 children and three teachers which focus on teaching children through a play-based environment. They have a huge outdoor area, which includes a bike track, mud kitchen, wood working area, swings, climbing tree, sand pit, playground, vege garden, orchard and even chickens. Cranford Pharmacy opens its doors

C

ranford Pharmacy is now open. Sharing its site with the new ProMed medical centre at 115 Sherborne Street, the pharmacy offers a full range of dispensary services and health and beauty products from its attractive new premises. Malcolm Pearce, Pharmacist and owner of Cranford Pharmacy and St Albans Pharmacy in Edgeware Village, says “It is exciting to have the new building finished and to now have the pharmacy up and running. We have always had a close relationship with the ProMed medical centre. They were over the road from us at Edgeware Village before the earthquakes and now we are even closer to them, with a walk-through from the doctors to

the pharmacy.” Pharmacists are said to be ‘the health professional you see most often’ and Malcolm and his staff recognise the important role that the pharmacies have in maintaining the health of the community and supporting patients with specific health needs. You are likely to see some familiar faces other than Malcolm’s when you pop in to Cranford Pharmacy. Experienced staff from St Albans Pharmacy are assisting the approachable pharmacy staff who have joined the team at Cranford Pharmacy. The location of Cranford Pharmacy is proving very convenient for people travelling to and from the inner city via Cranford Street. There is off-street parking for the pharmacy as well as parking available on both sides of the road. The opening hours also make it easy to drop in on the way to or from work or school ‘drop-offs’ and ‘pick ups’. St Albans Pharmacy has been a central part of Edgeware Village for more than 30 years. Malcolm and his team are looking forward to offering the same community pharmacy service at Cranford Pharmacy to the wider St Albans community.

Horticulture Training for Ensuring a safe work place Christchurch Residents

I

f you would like to enjoy gardening, improve your property value, produce fresh vegetables and fruit or get a job within the horticulture industry, this flexible programme can help you gain the necessary skills. Skills Update Training Institute has partnered with CPIT Aoraki to offer an introductory ‘no fees’ horticulture blended learning course which combines both classrooms and online learning methods. Tutorials have been scheduled weekly during evenings including the occasional weekend field trips to suit those currently working full time or part time. Our experienced tutors, Ryan Young or Hamish Kelland, are also available by phone and

e-mail outside of classroom hours. Ryan, the winner of various horticultural awards and titles, says “as your learning facilitator, I will assist you throughout the duration of the programme and provide guidance for each assessment.” “I am passionate about sustainable horticulture and really enjoy working with students to achieve their study and educational goals” says Hamish, who has a wide range of experience across the industry as well as teaching in the tertiary sector. Enrolments are now open for 2016. Call or email our team today. Study over 40 weeks and earn the sought after National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3.

L

earning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings.

The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Irish dance

Give it a go! How to Jig...

burst into the spotlight in the 90s with the introduction of Michael Flatley's world famous 'Riverdance' show. The distinctive dance style with its rigid posture and rapid leg and foot movements had us all attempting a 'jig' at one time or another. There are many styles of Irish dance steps such as the reel, the right jig, the heavy jig, the single jig, the hornpipe, and the group ceili - but the best known would have to be the basic 'jig'. Derived from the French word 'gigue', meaning fiddle, the traditional jig is accompanied by a fiddle usually playing in 6/8 timing.

•Point your left foot in front of you • Step onto your left foot and bring your right foot into a closed position behind it, transferring your weight onto your right foot • Bring your left toe up to your right knee as you hop • Swing your left leg so that your left knee is pointing in front of you and your foot is by your right knee (this is also done while hopping) •Place your left foot on the ground behind you - the first of four steps backwards, left, right, left, right •Your weight should now be on your right foot, so that you can point your left foot in front of you •Repeat over and over...

Thursday 17th March ST PATRICK was born somewhere on the west coast of Britain and when he was 16 he was captured by raiding Irish ships and taken to Ireland to be sold as a slave. He was bought by a man called Milchu who put him to work shepherding his flock on a mountain side. One night Patrick had a dream in which he heard a voice telling him to leave the mountain side and go down to the coast where he would find a boat to take him back home. When he reached the coast he saw the boat, as the dream had promised, but unfortunately as he had no money the boat’s captain refused to take him.

While many of us take part in celebrating St Patrick's Day, there are probably few New Zealand's who know much about the

Patron Saint of Ireland

The boat sailed away, but wasn’t long at sea when a fierce storm blew up. The crew fearing death told the captain that it is vengeance for not letting the lad aboard. Out of fear they turned the boat around and went back for Patrick. Patrick went on to study to become a priest and eventually was made a bishop. In a recurring dream he heard the voices of the children of Ireland calling him back to teach them about God, so returned to Ireland and went straight to see his old captor Milchu. This is where Patrick began converting the Irish pagan people to Christianity. While trying to explain the Holy Trinity he is said to have used a shamrock leaf to demonstrate how there could be three separate parts to the shamrock but only one leaf - and so the shamrock symbol of Ireland was born. St Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 as it is believed to be the date St Patrick died.
